Thailand Travel Guide for Cambodians: Entry Rules, Buses and Costs
Thailand is the number one destination for Cambodian travelers — over 40% of all outbound trips. Here is everything you need for a smooth first trip to Bangkok and beyond.
Entry rules for Cambodian passport holders
As an ASEAN national, you can normally enter Thailand without a visa for short tourist stays (up to 30 days when arriving by air; land-border rules can differ and change). Your passport must be valid at least 6 months. Immigration may ask to see a return ticket and proof of funds. Always check the current rules before you travel — entry policies change, and border situations between the two countries can affect crossings.
Getting to Bangkok
| Option | Price (one way) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Direct bus (Phnom Penh–Bangkok via Poipet) | $28–38 | 11–13 hours |
| Bus to Poipet + Thai train/bus from Aranyaprathet | $15–25 total | 12–14 hours |
| Flight PNH–BKK (Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi) | $60–150 | 1h 15m |
| Flight from Siem Reap (REP–BKK) | $55–130 | 1 hour |
At the Poipet border
Cross early in the morning to avoid queues, keep your passport in hand, and ignore anyone offering to “help” with stamps for a fee — the official counters are free. After the Thai side, minibuses and trains run from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok.
Money and SIM
Bring US dollars or riel to exchange for baht — rates in Bangkok are better than at the border. A Thai tourist SIM with unlimited data costs 150–300 baht at the airport or any 7-Eleven. Your ABA card works at Thai ATMs but fees add up; exchanging cash is cheaper.
Budget for 3 days in Bangkok (per person)
| Item | Budget | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Transport (return) | $60 | $220 (flights) |
| Hotel (2 nights) | $30 | $90 |
| Food, transit, fun | $50 | $120 |
| Total | ~$140 | ~$430 |
FAQ
Do Cambodians need a visa for Thailand?
For short tourist visits, no — ASEAN visa exemption applies (up to 30 days by air). Rules at land borders can differ and change; check before you go.
Which Bangkok airport will I arrive at?
Budget airlines mostly use Don Mueang (DMK); full-service airlines use Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Both have direct buses and trains to the city.
Is the direct bus comfortable?
It is long but workable — VIP coaches have reclining seats, air-con and a border-crossing assistant. Bring snacks and a jacket.
